General comments:
Commissioned by Peter Brett, the designer, and built in 1977, this Rival 38A is a serious offshore cruiser that’s been well updated and maintained over the years.
The hull has been designed, very much in the Rival tradition, to give excellent sailing performance and an easy motion, especially in rough weather. The fin-and-skeg construction reduces wetted area and the rudder is hung well aft for maximum steering control. The keel is long enough to enable safe drying out alongside a wall.
Hull and decks were hand laminated under Lloyds supervision. She was Gelshielded in 2014.
The iron ballast is completely encapsulated in the keel. Diesel and water tanks are stainless steel.
Uniquely, this Rival 38 has a fixed Perspex screen onto which a canvas sprayhood is attached.
The interior is fitted out in teak and white laminate. The varnish below is of an especially high standard and in excellent condition.
Nearly all headlining has been recently replaced.
In 2015 she was fitted with a Beta 43 engine, which has 646 hours. The engine spins a two-bladed Max Prop folding propeller.
All winches are Lewmar, with self-tailing 42s as primaries and 40s as secondaries in the cockpit, as well as self-tailing Lewmars at the mast for halyards.
The boat has a very large selection of tools and spares.
There is a bimini and cockpit awning.
The upper guard wire from the pushpit to the gates has been replaced with a stainless steel ‘granny bar’ for added security.
Standing and running rigging:
Standing rigging - backstay, cap shrouds and lowers - date from 2017. The forestay was replaced in 2023 when a replacement furler and foil were fitted.
Running rigging is generally in very good condition, with new main sheet, genoa sheets, genoa halyard and spinnaker halyard fitted in 2023.
Mast and sails:
Mainsail and furling genoa are recent and in very good condition (Z Sails of Connecticut, USA). The 140% genoa is on a Facnor furler (two slots on the foil).
The mainsail has three reefs (the third is very deep to avoid the need for a storm trysail).
Deck-stepped mast (with mast steps) and boom are anodised aluminium, with Lazy Jacks and a recent mainsail cover in excellent condition. There is also a staysail and storm jib (which hank on to the inner forestay) and a cruising chute.
Twin poles are attached to tracks on the forward face of the mast.
